Our Identity

We are Disciples of Christ, a movement for wholeness in a fragmented world. As part of the one body of Christ, we welcome all to the Lord’s Table as God has welcomed us.

Our Vision

To be and to share the Good News of Jesus Christ, witnessing, loving and serving from our doorsteps "to the ends of the earth." - Acts 1:8

Our Beliefs

Jesus said in John 14:6 "I am the way, the truth and the life."

Where the scriptures speak, we speak.  Where the scriptures are quiet, we are quiet.   We are inspired by the word of God. 

Communion

We practice unity and inclusion by welcoming everyone to the Lord’s Table. In the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), communion isn’t a reward; it’s a wide-open invitation for healing, mission, and community. Most of our congregations share the meal every Sunday as a reminder that God’s grace is for all. The chalice has become our symbol because it reflects that open table and our shared life in Christ.

Believer Baptism

In the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), baptism is a joyful response to God’s grace and a personal commitment to follow Jesus. We practice baptism by immersion, celebrating the moment someone chooses to step into a life of faith. At the same time, we recognize that people come to faith in many ways and from many traditions, so membership is not defined by baptism alone. However you arrive at the waters, and whatever your faith story looks like, you are welcome here.

Christian Unity

From the beginning, Disciples have understood ourselves as a movement for Christian unity. We partner with other faith communities - locally and globally - because we believe the work of healing, justice, and wholeness is bigger than any one tradition. Our long partnership with the United Church of Christ through Global Ministries is one expression of that shared call. We also practice unity within our own church life, staying in covenant with one another even when we disagree. Our tradition’s wisdom still guides us: unity is not uniformity, and everyone is welcome at Christ’s table.

We study scripture for ourselves

We take scripture seriously, and we believe every person can engage it for themselves. Instead of creeds or tests of faith, Disciples read the Bible with curiosity, context, and critical thought, paying attention to the history and stories behind the text. We listen for God’s movement together, trusting that honest study deepens our faith and strengthens our community.

We Are Growing Spirit-Filled, Committed Disciples of Christ

As "Disciples of Christ" we are one of over 4,000 similar congregations across the USA and Canada which had its origins on the American frontier in the early 19th century. Founding fathers of our church organization were Thomas and Alexander Campbell, Barton W. Stone, and Walter Scott. Since its beginning the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) has endeavored to promote unity and to increase respect and understanding within the family of God.

Disciples of Christ

As Disciples we strive to remain obedient to the Lordship and teachings of Jesus and the New Testament by practicing a faith which is socially relevant and intellectually sound. Members are bound together in fellowship and service by belief in the central "confession" of the New Testament, that "Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God."

In Illinois there are about 190 congregations of Disciples with over 50,000 members.
